Family Law Outreach
The Public Law Center provides legal advice, assistance completing court forms and pleadings, and court representation in the following areas:
- Guardianships
- Limited Conservatorships
- Dissolutions
- Custody/Visitation
- Child Support
- Restraining Orders
- Paternity
PLC, in conjunction with the Orange County Bar Association (OCBA), provides trainings in Guardianships, Dissolutions, and Domestic Violence to Orange County attorneys. Family law staff attorneys at PLC also conduct educational presentations on most family law topics at homeless and domestic violence shelters, at domestic violence shelter forty hour trainings, at family resource centers, and at a number of other venues.
How to Get Assistance
PLC offers a number of free legal clinics specifically designed to provide assistance with family law matters:
Guardianship Clinic- PLC and the OCBA partner to operate a guardianship clinic at the Lamoreaux Family Justice Center in Orange. Attorneys and advocates at the clinic assist people who are petitioning the court to serve as a legal guardian for a child whose parents aren't able to care for the child for a variety of reasons, including serious physical illness, drug rehabilitation, or incarceration. The assistance provided through the clinic ensures that children are raised in safe, stable and loving environments.
Conservatorship Clinic-Similarly, PLC and the OCBA hold a limited conservatorship clinic. At the clinic, attorneys and advocates provide assistance to people who are filing petitions to ensure the safety and wellbeing of an adult who is not able to care for him/herself.
La Habra Clinic-PLC also holds a clinic at the La Habra Family Resource Center, where victims of domestic violence can meet with PLC staff and volunteers in order to obtain advice and assistance with a wide variety of family law and other matters.
Alternatively, low-income Orange County residents may meet with an attorney or legal advocate at one of PLC's other free legal clinics. PLC also accepts a limited number of referrals from the Legal Aid Society of Orange County.
