Pro Bono Representation – PLC seeks volunteer attorneys to provide legal assistance for specific cases. Prior to case placement, PLC carefully screens new cases and confirms that clients meet income eligibility requirements. On a bi-monthly basis, PLC distributes the Case List, describing clients’ cases and legal needs. PLC’s Case List offers volunteers a variety of substantive cases including consumer law, employment, housing, health, immigration, transactional assistance for local non-profits, and family law. By providing pro bono representation, volunteer attorneys gain valuable legal experience as their client’s primary advocate from start to finish on a case.
Mentorship/Trainings - Volunteers with expertise in a specific legal area can serve as Mentors for less experienced attorneys. Also, PLC conducts MCLE trainings and community education presentations and seeks volunteers to be Trainers. As a Mentor or Trainer, volunteers have the opportunity to educate and network with other Orange County attorneys.
In-House Volunteers – Depending on space and staff needs, a volunteer may be able to work at the PLC office in Santa Ana. By working in-house, a volunteer has the opportunity to work closely with PLC staff attorneys to provide legal assistance to low income residents.
PLC strives to provide education and support to its volunteers. PLC conducts substantive trainings in areas critical to serving clients’ legal needs. PLC’s twenty-person staff also offers volunteers with support to properly represent their clients by providing legal expertise and support. In addition, PLC can assist with interpreting for clients who are non-English speaking. PLC offers primary malpractice insurance covering volunteers' work for PLC clients.
