PLC’s Medical Legal Partnerships (MLP) joins the efforts of legal services and the health care community to address legal issues which affect low-income patients’ health. With its community partners, including CHOC Children’s, the St. Joseph Hoag Health and the Laguna Beach Community Clinic, PLC’s MLP seeks to, first, alleviate acute medical crises by moving legal issues out of the doctor’s office and, second, improve community health by working to address the issues that cause bad health. Finally, many legal interventions can help to not only maintain continuity of care and reduce medical expense for someone already ill.
In collaboration with these medical providers, PLC‘s on-site services to medical patients includes legal services related to conservatorships, guardianships, representation in civil and probate litigation, wills, advance health care directives, powers of attorney, select immigration services, employment, landlord-tenant representation, representation in credit disputes and in bankruptcy, disability rights representation, special education and other areas as needed.
PLC also participates in the education rotation for Residents from CHOC Children’s, and is an active member in CalOptima’s Community Resource Alliance, the Orange County Cancer Coalition (MyOC3.org), the North Orange County Senior Services Collaborative, FAST (Financial Abuse Specialist Team), and the National Cancer Legal Service Network (NCLSN.org).
